Biography

Gary commenced legal practice as an articled clerk in a North Queensland general practice law firm in February 1986. He studied law externally through Queensland University Technology and graduated with an Honours Degree. He was also awarded the North Queensland Law Association bursary for the highest marks for an external law student in his first year of study.

Gary was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland in December 1992. He was then admitted as a solicitor of the High Court of Australia and the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

On of Gary’s career highlights was his involvement in a prominent Supreme Court case that changed the landscape for nervous shock compensation claims in Queensland. This case was also the subject of an Australian Civil Justice Award.

Gary has over 30 years of legal experience in most areas of the law. He spent a significant part of his career in general practice in Ayr and then Bowen in North Queensland, and was the sole practitioner of an office in Airlie Beach for 3 of those years.

Over time Gary found that his family law practice was growing, and his knowledge of and past experience in general practice meant that he could properly advise and assist his clients with the many other legal issues and transactions that arise out of separation.

Gary moved to the Gold Coast in 2011, and joined a boutique family law firm for 4 years, before moving back into general practice again. Gary joined OMB Solicitors in 2016.

Over the years Gary has been respected by his colleagues and clients for his ethics, and for his ability to explain the law (and how the law applies to the facts of a case) in a way that is clear and easy to understand. He has an understanding of and is empathetic towards the many clients that seek his services following separation, who are often suffering depression or otherwise present in an emotional and vulnerable state.

Outside of work Gary is a keen fisherman and enjoys boating. His has had fishing in his blood from childhood, catching his first Barra in the Burdekin River when he was 14, and winning the junior section of the North Queensland Light Gear Fishing Championships in 1984 when he was 16.

His other interests include meteorology, which he was studying at University before switching to Law. After being in the eye of a severe cyclone whilst living in Ayr (which demolished a significant part of his house), Gary joined the Australian Severe Weather Association and became a storm chaser.

Gary practices primarily in family law, including:
  • financial agreement preparation and advice,
  • parenting disputes,
  • property disputes,
  • divorce,
  • child support issues,
  • child safety proceedings, and
  • domestic violence cases.

Gary also continues his general practice at OMB Solicitors in areas that include civil law, criminal law, wills and estates (and estate litigation), commercial law and litigation, employment law, defamation, anti-discrimination and building disputes. Gary also assists the Body Corporate team as required.
